Reviving History: Rumery Lofts at 509 Forest Avenue, Portland Maine (Part 3)

If you drive Forest Ave often, you have likely seen the historic 509 Forest building, the future home of Rumery Lofts, a mix of 10 affordable and 28 market-rate loft-style units with garage parking. Additionally, there is 12,000 SF of first-floor commercial space available immediately subject to tenant’s buildout needs.


Giroux & Family Masonry is hard at work scouring the old brick and cast stone to prepare it for its final restoration which is a meticulous process of matching, patching and casting to the National Park Service’s satisfaction. Before long, we will see the scaffolding sheathed in plastic where the masons will work through the winter to bring the façade back to its former glory.


Inside, the upper floors where Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and Ella Fitzgerald once performed, are now completely gutted with freshly polished concrete floors by Epoxy Floors North. Framing of the new apartment walls can now begin.

It takes an army of talented individuals working in harmony (most of the time) to rehabilitate buildings with history.
