Freedom Place at 66 State features construction of a new building carefully designed to fit into the historic district of the West End of Portland and containing 30 affordable apartment units. The project is an extension of Phase I which created 38 Single Room Occupancy units next door for women experiencing homelessness, operated in partnership with the non-profit group Amistad. This new building injects much needed affordable housing to the neighborhood plus creates a transitional opportunity for Amistad clients successfully completing its programming for treatement and recovery. In total, 66 State St. Phases I and II represent an initial market rate condominium project, has through Developers Collaborative's creativity and public purpose, been converted to 68 affordable housing opportunities for women at a stage of their lives where safe housing is a paramount concern and an extremely scarce resource.
